Algeria expresses concern over terrorist attacks surge in the Saharan-Sahel region

Algeria has expressed concerns over the surge in terrorist attacks taking place in the Sahel-Saharan countries, in the past weeks.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad described the terrorist acts, which are targeting civilians, as crimes against humanity.

These attacks jeopardize the security of the African continent and international peace, the statement noted.

The Ministry denounced the terrorist attacks against the people of Burkina Faso and Mali, leading to huge human losses. Niger was targeted in similar attacks as well.

As part of its mandate as Coordinator of the AU Commission on the Fight Against Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa, Algeria called for mobilizing efforts across the continent to respond to this threat.

The AU must encourage efforts to preserve lives and dignity in Africa, according to the Ministry.

In another context, the Algerian army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Said Chengriha called on the soldiers to be more vigilant and cautious to thwart any terrorist plots. He called on the soldiers to intensify their efforts against terrorism until eradicating it.

He considered that the forest fires that erupted in the north of the country are part of a conspiracy against Algeria.

“We are determined to thwart this plot, whatever efforts and sacrifices it requires, supported by our proud people,” Chengriha stressed.
