17-year-old girl from London appears in court on terror charges over alleged Islamic State plot

A teenage girl has appeared in court on terror charges after she was allegedly in contact with an Islamic State jihadist and made attempts to join the group.
The 17-year-old, from central London, was arrested along with a 20-year-old woman by anti-terror detectives in August last year.

Today she was charged with the intention of committing acts of terrorism.

It is alleged between January 1 last year and March 31 she communicated with a person within the Islamic State terrorist group, possessed a flight booking to Istanbul with the intention to travel to Syria as well as self-radicalising. She is charged with contacting an Islamic State jihadist

She appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody until Friday, 28 April when she is due to appear at the Old Bailey.

Scotland Yard said: “This follows an investigation by officers from the Counter Terrorism Command.

“A 20-year-old woman who was also arrested as part of this investigation was subsequently released with no further action.
