Armed man steals ambulance and hits bystanders in Norway

An armed man driving a stolen ambulance has hit bystanders including two babies in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, police and hospital authorities said on Tuesday.

“Two babies were injured after the hijacked ambulance hit a family. They are twins, seven months old, they are being treated,” an Oslo University hospital spokesman told Reuters.

The hospital said later that one of the babies was slightly injured while the status of the other baby was not yet determined.

“A woman with a pram and an elderly couple were run over or had to throw themselves out of the way” of the stolen ambulance, Oslo police said in a Twitter post.

The suspect was shot and wounded before being apprehended by police. Authorities said the man was not seriously injured.

Police said they were searching for a second suspect – a woman described as having fair skin, brown hair and wearing a black jacket, around 1.65cm tall and “who appears to be under the influence”.

“We have no information for now indicating that this is terror-related,” police wrote in a later Twitter post.

The two suspects are Norwegian nationals and are previously known to police.
