Awat Hamasalih

Born: 1982;

Place of Birth: Kingstanding, United Kingdom;

Gender: Male;

Nationality: British;

General Info:
Awat Hamasalih is an Islamic State secret agent has been jailed for six years after using the United Kingdom as a base to tip off military commanders, raise money and recruit new fighters.

Also he was found guilty of the unusual charge of membership of a terrorist organisation. Hamasalih, from Kingstanding in the West Midlands, had claimed to be ‘an enthusiast who is proud to be British’ and denied he supported the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

He had successfully fought extradition to Italy on terrorist charges after irregularities were shown in the prosecution. But the court heard he was an ‘active and committed member’ of ISIS who was using the internet to drum up support for the terrorist group and sending young men to join the fighting.

Hamasalih also posted on social media in support of the Islamic State, while he had also been in contact with an individual believed to be a Islamic State commander and was communicating information on an attack on Mosul.

He has been found guilty of conspiracy to bring/throw/convey a prohibited article into prison after he arranged for his wife and his brother to send him SD cards in jail, concealed within two children’s books and a Harry Potter novel.

The package was intercepted by prison staff who handed it over to counter terrorism detectives for examination. The cards contained media files relating to a convicted terrorist, religious speeches, pictures and videos of his family.

Hamasalih planned with his Finnish wife Runak Othmani that she would download files for the SD card and then send it on to his brother Amang Hamasalih in Doncaster, who would then send on the package to prison.

Upon his arrest, detectives also found a spreadsheet containing the personnel details of infantry soldiers of the Peshmerga, the Kurdish military forces battling the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Both brothers will be sentenced on February 19 at Stafford Crown Court. Awat Hamasalih’s wife, Runak Othmani, is currently out of the country.
