Egyptian delegation meets Hamas leaders in Gaza

A high-ranking Egyptian security intelligence delegation arrived in the Gaza Strip and held talks with senior Hamas movement leaders, who control the enclave, according to security officials.

The officials said that the delegation came from the West Bank and arrived in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday through Erez Crossing point with Israel for a one-day visit to hold talks with Hamas leaders, reports Xinhua news agency.

They added that the delegation members discussed with Hamas leaders the ending of the internal Palestinian division and achieving unity to prepare for holding the general elections.

“The delegation discussed with Hamas enforcing the calm understandings reached with Israel in the Gaza Strip and the measures to relax the Israeli blockade to improve the population’s living conditions,” the officials said.

The Egyptian delegation’s arrival in the Gaza Strip came after Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Fatah Movement’s leaders traded accusations on hindering reconciliation and setting a date for holding the elections.

The two rival movements’ leaders held a round of dialogue in Cairo in November to discuss the reconciliation but failed to achieve a breakthrough after the Palestinian Authority announced that it restored its relations with Israel.
