ISIS executed over 6,000 people in Syria since 2014

The Islamic State (ISIS) carried out over 6,000 death sentences in Syria in four and a half years of control of large areas in the country at war, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reports. The executions included hangings, beheadings and throwing people off roofs, including some under the age of 18.

Since the announcement of the ‘Caliphate’ under Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in June 2014, SOHR documented 6,209 executions inflicted by ISIS in Syria on civilians, members of armed opposition groups and regime soldiers. Of the 6,209 killed, 3,691 were civilians including 128 under the age of 18 and 180 were women. The worst-hit regions were those with the greatest presence of ISIS: Deir al-Zor, Raqqa, Hasakah, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Damascus and the rural areas near Damascus.

SOHR counted 930 victims among the members of the Sunni Arab tribe Shaitat and 223 Kurdish civilians, as well as 467 “fighters of the rebel and Islamic factions, Fath al-Sham Front (al-Qaeda organization in the Levant) and YPG”, according to the English version of the SOHR website. An additional 691 members of ISIS itself were killed by the group, after being found guilty of “spying” or “treason”, as well as 1,358 Syrian “officers and members from the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them”, including Hezbollah and foreign Shia militias supporting the regime.
