Iraqi military officials on Wednesday said security forces had conducted operations in Anbar province, killing 14 members of the Islamic State (IS), and arrested two others in Mosul.

“The troops clashed with IS terrorists, killing 14 of them and destroying four of their armored vehicles,” Colonel Shaqer al-Rishawi told Bas News. He did not mention any casualties sustained by Iraqi forces in the incident, which occurred in Western Anbar’s al-Rutbah district.

On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry also noted in a statement that, “military intelligence managed to arrest two terrorists in the al-Qayyarah and al-Shura regions in Mosul.”

Earlier in the week, it continued, forces in West Mosul killed two additional IS fighters who were in the process of carrying out an attack targeting “a mayor” and a military officer was killed while detonating a bomb in East Mosul.

On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a special session on Iraq in which Jan Kubis, head of the UN’s mission in Iraq, stressed that “the security and protection environment” in Iraq remains “volatile, posing serious protection risks to Iraqi civilians.”
