A couple of Islamic State (IS), who were behind the killing of a mayor in western Mosul, were killed by the Iraqi forces, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

Iraqi reports said on Sunday that an official was killed when a bomb went off in al-Quds district of eastern Mosul, while two more army soldiers were wounded, as well during a military patrol on a highway to Hammam al-Alik region, southern the province, as reported by Iraqi News.

The Arab news agency, however quoted the Security Media Center, Maj. Gen. Saad Maan as saying that joint troops “backed by Nineveh police managed to kill two Islamic State members, who planted a bomb to target the mayor of al-Quds district.”

The official noted that the extremists were killed during conflicts in western Ninevah.

Even though Islamic State was announced defeated in December, last year, it still possesses many important territories in the country.
