French detective gave terrorist files to Moroccan spies

A former police officer will stand trial for corruption after passing French files on terrorism suspects to the Moroccan state intelligence service.

The retired chief inspector, named only as Charles D, was working for the air and frontier police at Paris Orly airport when he was lured into passing to a Moroccan agent, Mohamed B, up to 200 “S” files from the police watchlist of suspected Islamist radicals. Mr D, now 62, was arrested in 2017 along with “Driss A”, the Moroccan-born head of a security company at the airport.

According to the investigating judge Mr A was a persuasive character who won influence over Mr D, a Congolese-born former member of the Foreign Legion who had had a chequered police career and was in financial difficulties.

Mr A put him in touch with the agent and Mr D passed on the files, as well as details of Algerian ministers and other foreign VIPs who passed through Orly. In return, Mr D and his wife were given trips to Morocco and at least €17,000, the charges said.

Mr D’s wife will also face trial, as will Mr A, according to Le Parisien, which published extracts from the judge’s investigation. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Mohamed B, who has apparently left France.
