Georgianna Giampietro

Born: 1986;

Place of Birth: United States;

Gender: Female;

Nationality: American;

General Info:
Georgianna Giampietro is a woman from Tennessee who pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court after concealing material support and resources intended to be provided to Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, a designated terrorist organization.

She was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2019. Officials said FBI agents arrested her at her home in Sparta, and she remains in custody.

Giampietro conversed with an undercover agent in September 2018 who expressed interest in traveling to Syria to join Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organzation.

The agent also told Giampietro that her husband had sworn an oath of allegiance to Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, intending to fight on their behalf.

Court documents also showed how Giampietro provided instruction and advice to the undercover agent on how to travel to Syria in order to avoid detection by law enforcement.

She advised that the agent and her husband sever ties with people several months before traveling, acquire new phones and consider going through Turkey before entering Syria.

Giampietro was fully aware at the time that Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham is a terrorist group and she believed that both her husband and the undercover agent were going to Syria to meet up with the group and work for them.

In subsequent conversations with the agent, Giampietro offered to communicate with her contacts on their behalf to assist them in safely traveling to Syria to join the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham.

Giampietro subsequently engaged in a series of communications with an individual whom she knew could assist the undercover agent and her husband.

At one point after communicating with her contact, who claimed that there was presently no jihad in Syria, Giampietro asked the agent if she and her husband had considered traveling to Afghanistan since they were still fighting there.

Giampietro intended that the undercover agent and her husband would provide funds to her contact who in turn would provide funds to Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, thereby providing material support to Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham disguised as a charitable contribution.

Records show that Giampietro used an end-to-end encrypted social media platform to communicate with the undercover agent and also her contact.

She would sometimes make use of self-destruct timers during communication so the conversations would automatically delete, making recovery impossible.
