Islamic State terrorists working in Maldives with network of supporters

A report published by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) says that the Islamic State is working in the Maldives “with a network of supporters”.

The report submitted by the 1267 monitoring committee of the UNSC highlighted the Islamic State’s role in the island nation.

It notes that “the monitoring team was informed that ISIL-K works with a network of supporters in the Maldives”.

While the Islamic State took responsibility for an arson attack that destroyed five boats in the Mahibadhoo island harbour on April 15, the UNSC reports highlights that according to information received the attack “was a retaliation against government investigations into extremism and drug trafficking”.

The UNSC committee member states also expressed concern about the continued radicalisation and recruitment in the Maldives.

The report also highlighted that the Mahibadhoo harbour attack “was extensively covered in IS media network in South Asia.” Noting that the responsibility of the attack was taken via Al Naba, IS’s weekly newsletter, the UNSC report stressed that the claim of responsibility “was even translated to Dhivehi”.

Maldives Police Service said that Mahibadhoo harbour fire “appeared to be a terrorist attack.”
