Kamal Al-Helbawy

Activities:

Kamal al-Helbawy is lifelong member of the Muslim Brotherhood and a former member of its Guidance Bureau.

He became a founding member of the Brotherhood’s International Organization when they began trying to realize their global project in the late 1970s.

During al-Helbawy’s time abroad he became a spokesperson for the MB, first in Asia and then in Europe. He resigned as spokesperson 1997.

In spite of his resignation from the group and public criticism of its decisions and leaders, Helbawy’s heart is still with the MB. “I can never detach myself completely from the Muslim Brotherhood, even if I wanted to”, he says. Al-Helbawy founded and heads the Centre for the Study of Terrorism.

His profile states he helped create MAB, becoming its first founding president.

Helbawy is on record praising Osama bin Laden, denying al-Qaeda’s involvement in 9-11 and justifying the murder of Israeli children. He described bin Laden as ‘a great Mujahid’ (holy warrior) and prayed that he “…join the prophets, the martyrs and the good people.”

Al-Helbawy’s time in London and away from the Guidance Bureau in Cairo also had other effects on his political activity. In the last 10 years, unity has become a central pillar of his thinking.

Since 2004, al-Helbawy has been secretary general of the Forum for Islamic Unity, a group that began to promote Shia-Sunni understanding. He is also the founder of the Muslim League in Britain.
