As a teenager Khaled was a drug-addled petty criminal, whose substance abuse led to chronic mental illness (schizophrenia). Most likely caused by his sustained use of LSD, ecstasy and amphetamines.

Sharrouf rose to global prominence in 2014, when he posted picture, on his twitter account, of his seven-year-old son holding a severed head.

In 2005 Sharrouf was charged, along with eight other Sydney men, over the biggest terrorism plot in Australian history.

Australian counterterrorism units uncovered an enormous cache of guns, ammunition, and bomb-making material.

Group’s spiritual leader was Melbourne sheikh Abdul Nacer Benbrika. In 2009, Benbrika was jailed for 15 years for his part in the plot to blow up targets in Melbourne and Sydney.

Sharrouf was sentenced to a minimum three years and 11 months jail. After his release Sharrouf fell back into the criminal world.

In December 2013, he had slipped out of Australia, traveling on his brother’s passport, to join Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
