Kurdish Ezidi child brainwashed by ISIS terrorists is highly de-socialized

After being separated from his mother and living under the Islamic State’s (IS) control for almost three years, a Kurdish Yezidi (Ezidi) child remains highly indoctrinated with the insurgent’s ideology.

The militants occupied the Ezidi-populated city of Sinjar (Shingal) in the western Kurdistan Region where Mto Nashwan Yousif, 7, and his mother were held captive.

IS later separated them in Raqqa, Syria and took Yousif to educate him with extremist ideology and recruit him as a child soldier.

Both Yousif and his mother now live in the Rwanga camp in the Kurdistan Region’s Dohuk Province.

“He is highly de-socialized,” his mother Wahida Musa told Kurdistan24, stating Yousif is disinterested in visiting relatives or shopping with them.

“He is not like other kids with a desire to go out and play. He prefers not to see anyone and stay at home,” Musa said.

She also mentioned Yousif uses a knife and tries to behead his toys as he hollers Arabic slogans similar to IS.

Musa explained her son also deals with his toy weapon as if it was a real weapon by loading and unloading the magazine.

“IS taught him how to operate the different parts of a weapon,” she stated.

The Director of the Rwanga Camp Nadiyar Lazgin Khalil told Kurdistan24 they cannot guarantee the psychological stability of those freed from IS and brought to the camp.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a plan or a program to help them in recovering and improving their psychological conditions,” Khalil said.

Following the occupation of Shingal, IS committed mass executions against Ezidis, kidnapping and selling their women in black markets as sex slaves.

In November 2015, Peshmerga forces with the support of the US-led coalition airstrikes liberated Shingal from the extremist group.
