European department for security and information (DESI) has said that they have received information that the leader of ISIS militant group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was arrested by Syrian and Russian joint forces.
The media office of DESI secretary general said in a press release on Tuesday that this came after Baghdadi was pushed to leave Mosul after Iraqi forces launched an operation to retake the key city from ISIS terrorists.

The media office stressed that they will reserve the details of this information until further confirmation.

It also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin may use this information to attack US credibility in the battle against terrorism in next Geneva convention.

However, Russia has denied reports that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been arrested in Syria.

The Russian Foreign Ministry told Rudaw that they do not have knowledge of the news and were not aware whether Baghdadi has been arrested.

“We are not aware of the arrest of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, caliphate of the Islamic State, and have not received any information or clarification on this regard,” staff of the ministry’s media office said according to Rudaw.

ISIS, which is known as the most deadly terrorist group, shocked the world when it took over Mosul in June 2014 and also gained ground across the Arab country.

Backed by Western countries as opposition against the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad, ISIS became very powerful in Syria.

ISIS now controls the large Iraqi towns of Hawijah and Tal Afar, as well as remote areas along the border with Syria in western Iraq.

In Syria, the terrorist group also holds the city of Raqqa and other areas.
