Man from Kosovo pleads guilty to belonging to Islamic State

A Kosovo national has pleaded guilty to charges of terrorism. The Special Prosecution on November 7 indicted Agon Misini, who was repatriated to Kosovo from Syria, and who had fought alongside the ISIS terrorist organization in the Middle East.

The Special Prosecution said Misini left Kosovo willingly in July 2015, following preliminary preparations, for the purpose of going to Syria.

Having already contacted supporters of the ISIS terrorist organization ISIS, in August 2015, using the forged passport of a person from Skopje, he went by bus to Greece, from where he went to the Turkish border.

The indictment says that Misini, upon arriving in Syria, joined the terrorist organisation ISIS, and after active tactical and combat training took an active part in the Syrian wars. He was arrested on July 26, 2017, by Kurdish forces and held until April 2019, when he was repatriated to Kosovo.

The Special Prosecution’s Afrim Shefkiu urged the court to deliver a guilty verdict, reminding it of the aggravating circumstances, the severity and willfulness of the offense, the fear it has caused other citizens, and in particular a video recording containing incriminating content.

He said he hoped a tough sentence would also “prevent other persons from participating in and organizing terrorist offences”.

Misini’s defense mentioned the mitigating circumstances that the court should take into account, and the family situation, the fact that he was in conflict with the law for the first time, had divulged the names of other members of ISIS, and his deep remorse. The verdict will be announced on December 2.
