Masrour Barzani: Islamic State is about ideology not territory
Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council, Masrour Barzani, received on Tuesday the Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat Islamic State Ambassador William Roebuck to review the latest developments in security challenges of the region.
During the “lengthy” meeting, Barzani expressed concern over increasing IS activities across Iraq, according to the readout of the meeting.
“Chancellor Barzani expressed concern about increasing ISIS [Islamic State] activity in several provinces, including Anbar, Mosul, Diyala and Kirkuk. He stressed the need for Iraq and its international partners to tackle the underlying political, economic and security challenges in parallel to the military campaign,” according to the readout.
Barzani wrote later on Twitter that IS is not about territory, but it is about ideology that needs to be eradicated.
Ambassador Roebuck emphasized on the importance of close security coordination between Erbil and Baghdad in the disputed areas, an idea that was welcomed by the Kurdish security chief.
