Nineveh Provincial Council against the repatriation of Islamic State families from Syria

The provincial council of Iraq’s Mosul objects to the alleged plan of repatriation of Islamic State (IS) families from Syria to Iraq, a council member said.

Earlier reports indicated that the Iraqi government is working on a plan to bring back hundreds of IS jihadists’ family members from Syria’s al-Hol camp to other settlements outside Mosul.

Khalil Shamo, a member of the Nineveh Provincial Council, told BasNews that they see the move as a serious threat to the security of Iraq, and the council is against any move of this kind.

There are more than 70,000 members of IS and their families held in a massive camp in Syrian Kurdish province of Hasakah, under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Local authorities have been making repeated calls on regional and European states to take back their citizens whom are now held in al-Hol Camp. However, US, UK, France and many other countries are reluctant to repatriate the IS members.

A Kurdish official in Mosul previously described the IS members as “time-bombs” if they are taken back to Iraq.
