As many as 10 Iraqi security men were killed in an attack by Islamic State militants on a gas field in western Anbar.
“IS militants launched an attack on Akkas gas field in western Anbar, leaving 10 security forces dead,” a security source told Alghad Press website.
“Tribal and popular mobilization forces rushed to the site in a bid to repulse the brutal attack,” added the source.
Earlier in the day, an Iraqi serviceman was killed and two others went missing following an attack by Islamic State militants on a military vehicle in Al-Qa’im district in Anbar.
Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq last November with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.
Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.
