After being discharged from the Georgian military, Batirashvili became jihadist and served in various command positions with Islamist militant groups fighting in the Syrian Civil War.
In 2013, he joined Islamic State and rapidly became a senior commander in the organization, directing a series of battles and ultimately earning a seat on Islamic State’s shura council.
In December 2013, Tarkhan known as, Abu Omar al-Shishani promoted Ikanovic to head of the Islamic State’s largest military training camp in northern Syria.
