Turkish authorities deport three foreign terrorists to Germany

Turkey deported three German nationals who were detained in Syria over links to the Islamic State (ISIS), the Turkish Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The foreign fighters were sent back to Germany as part of Turkey’s ramped-up efforts to repatriate ISIS fighters, the ministry said.

Turkey started deporting ISIS members to their home countries in November amid severe criticism from European countries of the military operation it launched in north Syria in October.

The government said that 287 ISIS members had been captured in northeast Syria during the nine-day military offensive when it announced its decision to repatriate foreign fighters.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said early December that Turkey had deported 7,500 ISIS members since the start of a civil war in Syria, adding that there were 1,149 ISIS members in Turkish prisons.
