Place of Birth: Russia;

Gender: Female;

Nationality: Russian;

General Info:
Varvara Karaulova is a Russian supporter of radical Islamic views, and she decided to participate in the activities of the Islamic State terrorist organization but she was detained on her way to Syria.

Karaulova, who had changed her name to Ivanova, was a sophomore in the Moscow State University, when she was detained on June 4 on the Turkish-Syrian border while traveling with a group of foreigners allegedly recruited by Islamic State terrorists. She was deported to Moscow in June 2015. She left for Istanbul without telling her parents on May 27.

Karaulova was first detained on the Turkish-Syrian border together with a dozen of other would-be jihadists and deported to Moscow in June 2015.

Her father said she had fallen in love with a Islamic State recruiter. She changed her name to Alexandra Ivanova months after returning home but was accused of preparing another trip to Syria.

The prosecutor asked to sentence Karaulova to five years of imprisonment and to fine her 150,000 rubles ($2,450) rubles. Lawyers insisted that she be acquitted.

The Moscow District Military Court sentenced former Moscow State University student Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova), who tried to join the Islamic State terrorist group, to 4.5 years in a general regime penal colony.
