Terror warning: ISIS jihadis are fleeing Syria and Iraq and heading for the Far East

General Robert Brown, Commander US Army Pacific, said it was a “huge concern” that as the terror outfit gets squeezed in the Middle East its fighters are finding new refuges.

IS or ISIS has lost control of most of its last stronghold in Iraq, Mosul, and its self-styled capital in Syria, Raqqa, is steadily being encircled by US-backed local forces.

In a speech to the Royal United Services Institute in London, Gen Brown said the Pacific area is increasingly becoming home to violent extremist groups.

This reflects widespread concern among terror analysts that when Islamic extremists are battered in one area, they will just pop up somewhere else.

Gen Brown told the military think-tank: “As they are being pushed out of other areas in the Middle East and Africa, they are finding places to go.

“I mentioned the expanse of the Pacific region, They are being found in Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia.

“Recently about 30 violent extremist organisations pledged to ISIS in Indonesia.

“The good news is that Indonesia has excellent counter-terrorism so efforts are being made in the largest Muslim country in the world. They are getting after it.

“But these violent extremist organisations are a huge concern for everybody’s security.”
