Abdullahi Osman Mohamed (also known as Engineer Ismail), is a senior al-Shabaab official and is the terrorist group’s senior explosives expert responsible for the overall management of al-Shabaab’s explosives operations and manufacturing.

Mohamed is believed to have been born either in Garissa County or in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Engineer Ismail is responsible for many of the powerful devices that have killed hundreds of civilians in Somalia in recent years.

He is also a special adviser to the so-called emir of al-Shabaab and is the leader of al-Shabaab’s media wing, al-Kataib,” the statement said.

He was recently listed by the US government as a “specially designated global terrorist”, a step that freezes any assets he may have in US jurisdictions and bans Americans from doing any business with him.

Mohamed is also thought to have to have masterminded a series of attacks in the last year, including an assault in January on a military base in Kenya that killed an American soldier and two US contractors.
