Islamic State car bomber arrested in Nineveh by the Iraqi authorities

Nineveh police forces on Sunday announced the arrest of an Islamic State (IS) military commander in charge of making car bombs, also known as vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs).

“The wanted criminal was responsible for planting bombs in cars in the Aski sector in Nineveh when the province was under IS occupation,” Nineveh Police Chief Brigadier General Hamad al-Jabouri told Anadolu Agency.

Jabouri said the police had received intelligence reports on the whereabouts of an IS militant by the name of Nizar Salih located in the plains on the west side of Nineveh.

Six months have passed since Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s declaration of victory over the terrorist organization.

However, Iraqi security forces have ongoing operations against IS, as sleeper-cells carry out small-scale attacks across the country in general and its disputed territories in particular.

Thousands of members of the terrorist organization have been killed and arrested since December.

During a security campaign in early May, Nineveh police arrested 15 suspected IS members, among them a female involved in the killing of multiple women when the city was under the militant group’s rule.
