A 43-year-old German national shot and killed at least 9 people at several locations in a Frankfurt suburb overnight. Officials said the attacks seem to have been motivated by far-right beliefs.
The gunman first attacked a shisha bar in central Hanau on Wednesday evening, killing several people before heading west and opening fire again, claiming more victims. Some of the victims are believed to be Turkish.
Authorities said that with the help of witnesses and surveillance videos they quickly found the suspect, who drove to his home, near the scene of the attack. He was found dead near his 72-year-old mother’s dead body.
Authorities said a website believed to be the suspect’s is being evaluated: “Initial analysis of the webpage of the suspect indicate a xenophobic motivation”, they added.
German media reported that police are examining a video the suspect may have posted online several days earlier. In the video, he details a conspiracy theory about child abuse in the United States.
Germany has suffered several terror attacks in recent years. One of them was claimed by ISIL and killed 12 people in Berlin in 2016.
