Wife of Islamic State Somalia branch leader sentenced to eight years in jail

A Somali military court has sentenced the wife of the leader of the Islamic State’s branch in the country, Abdukadir Mumim, to eight years in prison for belonging to the jihadist group and financing its terrorist activities.

The woman, identified as Fartun Abdirashid Husein, was arrested in March 2022 during an operation in the capital Mogadishu, as reported by the Somali news agency SONNA.

The Somali branch of Islamic State emerged in October 2015 after a group of Al Shabaab militiamen splintered from the group and focuses its operations in Puntland. Despite Mumin pledging allegiance to then Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, the latter neither responded nor appointed him as the person in charge of the extremist formation’s branch in the country.
