Somalia reports 150 Al Shabaab militiamen killed in military operations

The Somali Armed Forces have reported on Sunday the death of 150 militiamen of the jihadist group Al Shabaab in military operations carried out in recent days.

The Ministry of Information of the Somali government has reported this information on its Facebook page without providing further details about the operations.

The death of a senior Al Shabaab official identified as Mohamed Yusuf Jingab was already reported on Saturday in an operation carried out this week, which also resulted in the death of almost 90 members of the terrorist group.

The operation took place in the area of Juhay, Middle Shabelle region, last Thursday, September 15, under the direction of the National Intelligence and Security Agency of Somalia (NISA) and with the cooperation of “international allies”, according to the statement published by the official news agency of the African country, Sonna.

The government identifies Yusuf Jingab as the head of the “Radicalization Department”, a section aimed at recruiting Somali youths or, as the authorities describe it, “deceiving the youth”.

On the other hand, the Somali Army has reported that another 40 Al Shabaab members have been killed in another military operation carried out on Saturday night in the village of Daru Na’im, also in the Middle Shabelle region.

“The Army destroyed the positions where the Jauarij (translatable as “renegades of Islam”) were gathering and Daru Na’im is now under the control of the Army,” the note said.

Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with support from local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, who pledged on taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
