Pamir Hakimzadah is a former Ryerson student who pleaded guilty earlier this month to one count of leaving Canada to participate in a terrorist activity.
He was turned in to local authorities by a taxi driver in Turkey who suspected Hakimzadah wanted to join the terrorist group, and was sent back to Canada.
A family member then turned him over to police two years later. Hakimzadah admitted he viewed Islamic State militant propaganda videos online and became sympathetic to their viewpoint.
Hakimzadah’s father said his son was previously arrested while visiting in Turkey. He rejected the allegations made by police and said he didn’t want to comment further as “the judge will make a decision.”
Police said the investigation started in January 2016 after investigators learned Hakimzadah allegedly went to Turkey in the fall of 2014 to join the Islamic State. Officers said he was previously returned to Canada after being detained by Turkish authorities. The RCMP said there wasn’t any public safety risk during the time of the investigation.
