UN Security Council Condemns Continued Terrorist Attacks in Afghanistan

The UN Security Council has strongly denounced the “continued heinous terrorist attacks” against civilians in Afghanistan, including a Monday attack close to the Afghan Foreign Ministry that left at least six people dead and several others injured.

The Council members emphasized that terrorism, in all its forms and incarnations, poses one of the gravest threats to world peace and security and to peace and security in Afghanistan, said a statement.

They stressed the importance of holding those responsible for these heinous acts of terrorism accountable and bringing them to justice.

They also reiterated that it is a necessity for all member nations to use every tool at their disposal to battle “threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.”

The statement by the UN Security Council came after a deadly attack on Monday in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which killed six people and wounded several others.

The Islamic State or Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack in Kabul.

This is the second attack within three months; the first happened in January, in which more than 20 people were killed and injured. The group also took responsibility for the attack.

Daesh is the main rival of the current Taliban authorities and aims to target Taliban officials, ordinary people and foreign nationals.

The attack followed the remarks of the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban, Muttaqi claiming that Daesh has not present in the country.
