Somali City of Baidoa Cut Off By Al-Shabaab Blockade

Baidoa, the largest city of the South West state in Somalia has been blockaded by Al-Shabaab since Tuesday, July 11, 2023. This ahead of a planned government military offensive in the region, has affected businesses and resulted in price hikes as vehicles transporting goods from towns and the capital city Mogadishu are stranded.
Authorities have said that Al-Shabaab has cut off supplies in and out of the area, worsening hunger caused by record drought and insecurity. According to the UN, Baidoa is home to about 600,000 internally displaced people forced from their homes by the Al-Shabaab insurgency and drought.
Analysts have said that by imposing the blockade, Al-Shabaab is affirming its strength and that could worsen the situation in the region.
