Step up Borno, Yobe anti-terror war, Reps urge military

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, called for military intervention against terrorists to rescue farmers abducted in the Jere Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by the lawmaker representing Jere Federal Constituency, Borno State, Mr Ahmed Satomi.

Leading the debate, Satomi said heavily armed Boko Haram terrorists attacked farmers working in their rice fields in Jere Mafa LGA killing several of them at the weekend.

He expressed worry that the gunmen carried out their evil activity less than 20 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital without fear of being repelled by the military.

He also expressed concern at the swift manner the evil gang carried out the act, using crude weapons like cutlasses and knives to butcher their victims, adding that security forces and Civilian Joint Task Force in the state had succeeded in recovering nine corpses as the search for the missing farmers continued.

“Alarmed that in spite of the terror attack of Saturday, November 4 and the current search and rescue operations, which is still ongoing, another attack and massacre of about 50 persons was again carried out in the night of Sunday, November 5, 2023.

“Further alarmed that if urgent and drastic steps are not taken, the area may be overrun by terrorists with attendant dire consequences,” he said.

Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Nigerian Army to immediately mobilise troops to the affected areas to neutralise the terrorists and restore normalcy to the villages.

The House further urged the military to fortify security in Geidam and Yunusari Local Government area of Yobe State to secure the communities to forestall further attacks.

This was sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by Lawan Shettima, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Shettima noted that terrorist attacks happened in a town in Geidam Local Government Area last week Monday and Tuesday.

According to him, terrorists on a revenge mission, went to Nguro Kayaiya town riding on about 15 motorbikes with sophisticated weapons, paraded and killed 16 male villagers at the outskirts of the village and later burnt down the village including houses, vehicles and tricycles.

“On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in the afternoon, villagers from neighboring Mallam Kelluri of Gumsa village unit numbering about 14 on tricycles ran over explosive device planted by the terrorists around the village which exploded and killed 12 persons while four were taken to hospital.

“Worried that several villages including Nguro Kayaiya Village, Jororo Village in Geidam LGA, Garin Bulama Garaiye, in Yunusari Local Government were burnt down and further worried that this is one of several attacks in Geidam and Yunusari LGAs within the spate of 13 years,” the lawmaker called on the House to rise up and protect the people from further attacks on their lives and residences.
