Two Islamic State arms smugglers arrested in Erbil

The Counter Terrorism Directorate (CTD) arrested two Islamic State (ISIS) arms smugglers in the al-Zaytun area of Erbil, the Special Operations Joint Task Force (SOJTF) – Levant announced on Thursday (December 16).

“These operations deny Daesh [ISIS] the ability to smuggle, transport and store weapons,” the SOJTF-Levant said in a Twitter statement.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) announced on Wednesday (December 8) the arrest of 13 suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members in a string of operations throughout the country.

Iraqi forces regained territorial control of Iraq from ISIS in 2017 but sleeper cells have remained. The security situation has been especially vulnerable in areas of the country between the control of the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces.
