ISIS attack on Kakayi village in south Kirkuk repelled by villagers

The Islamic State (IS) raided overnight on Tuesday a village of Kakayis in the town of Daquq south of Kirkuk, and the villagers were able to repel them on their own, without the help of the Iraqi forces, sources said on Wednesday.

The jihadists attacked the village of Zanqar only two days after they raided a nearby rural area of Kakayis and opened fire at a young man, leaving him with injuries, according to the information BasNews has learned.

No reports on casualties from any sides are currently available.

The extremists have lately carried out many terrorist activities against the areas where the minority group is located and several Kurdish military officials have warned of the militant group’s re-emergence in the disputed areas despite the fact that Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi announced full victory over the insurgents in December, last year.

Most of the minorities, therefore, escaped their region to the province of Kirkuk and Kurdistan Region.
