Egyptian court sentenced four people to life and woman to three years in Islamic State espionage case

Life in prison carries a sentence of 25 years in jail in Egypt.

The court also acquitted three from charges of espionage in the same case.

The verdicts are not final and can be appealed.

The prosecution accused the defendants of spying for the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) from 2012 to 2018.

The defendants allegedly agreed to supply ISIS’ members within the country with necessary funding and information about vital institutions — specifically Gargoub Maritime Port, and Ramses and Sidi Gaber Train Stations — in order to attack them.

These communications were conducted through Telegram — a messaging application — the prosecution explained.

The prosecution also charged the defendants with financing a terrorist group to commit an act of terrorism, the statement said, as they collected, received, possessed, supplied, transferred, and provided money and information to ISIS with the intention of using them to commit terrorist crimes.
