‘Hamas is not only a threat to Israel’: EU Parliament member Assita Kanko slams colleagues for defending terror organisation

European Parliament member Assita Kanko has renewed calls for a stronger global effort to fight Hamas weeks after warning of rising anti-Semitism in Europe.

In October, the Belgian MP delivered a powerful speech to her colleagues in the European Parliament about rising anti-Semitism on the continent in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

“Have you seen what happened in Israel? They killed babies just because they’re Jews. Do you remember history? Do you remember on European soil?” she asked the Parliament.

“(Protestors) are defending Palestinians but in fact they’re supporting the terrorist group Hamas.”

On Friday, Ms Kanko appeared on Sky News with Erin Molan in an Australian exclusive.

“I can’t understand why people are taking our rights for granted and accepting this behaviour that is actually impacting human dignity and not speaking up against it,” she told Molan.

“For me, it’s completely unacceptable and unbelievable.

“I was born in an area without freedom, and freedom is something you need to fight for. And right now this is not what Europe is doing.”

Ms Kanko was born in the landlocked African country Burkina Faso and later emigrated to Belgium.

Since 2015, the small African nation has struggled against an ongoing brutal Jihadist insurgency led by Al-Qaeda rebels that has resulted in the deaths of more than 10,000 civilians.

“For me, who was born in Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in the world, I grew up under dictatorship and inside a traditional Islamic family,” she said.

“I succeeded to become secular, to learn how to appreciate freedom and to stand for it. And I have the impression that in Europe we have too long been taking freedom for granted and been taking the heritage of enlightenment for granted. And we need to fight for it again.”

Molan then pressed Ms Kanko on why many western leaders refuse to define a “clear aggressor and the clear victim” in the conflict in a similar vein to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“I can’t, for the life of me understand how some people can continue to defend Hamas. What’s the reaction in general been like in Europe?” Molan quizzed the Parliamentarian.

Ms Kanko said the problem was a lot of people within Europe and the west were “still quite hypocritical” and “opportunistic”.

“So when they speak about Hamas, especially from the left side, they act as if Hamas is just a random organisation, a politically random organisation, and some people on the left side even fail to call Hamas a terror organisation – which it is and what the European Union has also decided.”

The MP from Belgium also warned that Hamas was not just a threat to Israel but represents a broader danger to Jews around the world as an Islamist terror organisation.

“Hamas is not only a threat to Israel, it’s also a threat to women. It’s a threat to all Jews worldwide because it’s based on radical Islam, is a threat to all critical thinkers, is a threat to Europe, just like ISIS was, just like Al-Qaeda was,” she said.

“It’s completely absurd that we need to convince people that they have to fight for this, but usually they will support migrants who are not integrating, who are not defending our values, but supporting Hamas, for example, or other conditions and Sharia elements just because they want to have the votes.

“But politics should be about ideas, not about complying with the opposite of our freedom.”
