Saleck Ould Cheikh Mohamedou

Saleck is a senior operative in Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI).

He is accused of masterminding a 2007 attack that left four French tourists dead.

Saleck was sentenced to death in Mauritania in 2011 after his conviction for attempting to assassinate the Mauritanian head-of-state Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

He is best known for his role in a foiled 2011 attack with multiple car-bombs on the Mauritanian defense ministry and French embassy in Nouakchott.

Saleck confessed that he was planning an attack on state television after his arrest and was sentenced to death. But he escaped from prison in 2015 only to be recaptured in January 2016.
