A terrorist attack took place on July 24 during the thyranoixia (‘opening of the doors’) ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Church of Aghia Sophia in Al-Suqaylabiyah (Seleukovelos in Greek) in Northern Syria which left at least two dead and a dozen people injured, the Catholic News Agency (CNA) reported.

According to the CNA, the church was built by the governments of Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin as a mini-replica of Aghia Sophia of Constantinople in reaction to its conversion from a museum to a mosque.

Al-Suqaylabiyah is a Greek Orthodox Christian Syrian city about 30 miles northwest of Hama.

“The attack has been variously attributed to rockets, missiles, or armed drones,” CNA reported, adding that “the Syrian Arab News Agency, the country’s state media, attributed the attack to ‘terrorist organizations.’”
